  8.        1.  _I_n_t_r_o_d_u_c_t_i_o_n

  10.        This document describes the features of release 2.3.* and
  11.        2.2.* of the Impressario software for IRIX.  Impressario is
  12.        a visual printing and scanning environment for SGI
  13.        workstations.  It consists of an optional host-based Adobe
  14.        PostScript interpreter, printer drivers, scanner drivers,
  15.        text processing tools and the Impressario Developer's Kit.
  16.  
  17.        Impressario is distributed with new hardware systems WITHOUT
  18.        the FLEXlm node locked license for the Adobe PostScript
  19.        interpreter.  A license must be purchased if you wish to use
  20.        the Adobe PostScript interpreter.  Many of the printer
  21.        drivers require the Adobe PostScript interpreter (for
  22.        details see section 2, Installation Information).  In
  23.        general, if your printer does not have built-in PostScript
  24.        capability you will need the optional license to use the
  25.        printer with Impressario.

  45.           +o A PPD based driver has been added to Impressario.  A
  46.             large number of PostScript Printer Description (PPD)
  47.             files are now supplied with Impressario (PPD files are
  48.             also available for most PostScript capable printers
  49.             from the printer vendor's Web site).  The result is
  50.             that Impressario supports more printers with built-in
  51.             PostScript capability.  See the ppd(1m) man page and
  52.             Section 3, Changes and Additions, in this document for
  53.             details.

  90.        A more detailed description of Impressario follows:
  91.  
  92.        The Impressario software provides a visual printing and
  93.        scanning environment.  It contains drivers for sending print
  94.        jobs to a printer connected to an SGI workstation via a
  95.        parallel, serial, SCSI, or network connection.   All
  96.        Impressario printer drivers maintain status information in a
  97.        printer object database.  The Graphical Scan tool allows you
  98.        to view data from a scanner, file, or workstation display.
  99.        The Scanner installation tool provides a simple interface
  100.        for installing and configuring scanners on your workstation.

  102.        The PostScript interpreter is an Adobe Level II CPSI
  103.        implementation (version 2015).  The PostScript interpreter
  104.        is a separate purchase option and uses a node-locked
  105.        software license.  Many of the Impressario printer drivers
  106.        require the optional PostScript interpreter. See section 2.4
  107.        _P_r_e_r_e_q_u_i_s_i_t_e_s for information on license requirements.  For
  108.        more information on the PostScript interpreter see the

  111.        The Impressario Developer's Kit allows application and
  112.        driver developers to create software that fully supports
  113.        printing and scanning in a manner that is consistent with
  114.        the Impressario architecture.

  116.        IMPORTANT: If your printer or scanner is already installed,
  117.        you must delete and reinstall it using the printer manager
  118.        or scanner manager to take advantage of new features in this
  119.        latest release of Impressario. See Chapter 2 IIIInnnnssssttttaaaallllllllaaaattttiiiioooonnnn
  120.        IIIInnnnffffoooorrrrmmmmaaaattttiiiioooonnnn for details.  An exception are printer clients
  121.        running IRIX 4.*.  IRIX 4.* users should not delete and
